Mock Trial at the University of Iowa

Our Program

The University of Iowa's Mock Trial Program is an organization with a longstanding tradition of excellence. We compete in tournaments across the country against other highly ranked programs during our competitive season, and traditionally place highly at the national level. Among our current members are nationally recognized competitors. Every year we host the annual Cornshucker Challenge, with teams traveling from schools around the nation to compete at our tournament. We are an organization focused on entertaining, persuading, and impressing.

What is Mock Trial?

Mock Trial is an activity based around competitive storytelling.

Each year, our overarching organization, the American Mock Trial Association, provides a case to all competing schools for them to prepare. These teams prepare examinations of witnesses, statements, and case strategy from the materials provided, and then during competition, the case is tried like it would be in a real courtroom.

AMTA provides ballots by which individual competitors are scored on their performance, speaking ability, and understanding of the case and rules of evidence.

Mock Trial provides participants with excellent speaking skills, an understanding of the Federal Rules of Evidence and courtroom procedure, and a close-knit group of friends for life.
