The Road Thus Far
-National Championship Tournament-
On April 15th-17th, Iowa returned to the National Championship Tournament after three years, the longest time not qualifying in our program's history. In Greenville, South Carolina, Iowa competed in four rounds against the top 5% of teams in the nation, Florida State, Stanford, Michigan, and Chicago, whom we'd like to thank.
For the NCT, all teams competing received an entirely new case with 28 days to prepare it, and it was that case we tried in Greenville. For the first time in AMTA history, five scoring judges watched each round, giving every team a total of 20 possible ballots to win, which was just one of the may outstanding aspects of the NCT that our hosts, Furman University, provided.
We came away from the weekend among the top tier of teams in the country, and with a a promise to return again next year.
Until next year, GO HAWKS!
-Opening Round Championship Series-
-Regional Tournament-
Iowa B and C attended the St. Louis Regional competition on February 6th and 7th, and came out on top. Iowa B took third place overall in a field of 26 teams at one of the toughest regionals in the country, earning a bid to the Opening Round Championship Series, or ORCS. Iowa C, a team made up almost entirely of first-year mockers fought hard and earned an honorable mention. UIMT came away from the Regional weekend with three individual awards, two of which were double-sided.
Iowa A attended the Kansas City Regional on the 19th and 20th of February, and earned the program's second bid to ORCS. Iowa A took seventh place in a field of 24 teams, and earned two individual awards for our witnesses.
See everybody at ORCS. Go Hawks!
-Spring Semester-
UIMT shook off the rust of winter break by attending the Mid-Missouri Invitational hosted by Columbia College, and won two individual witness awards. Then, we cleaned house at two separate tournaments, the Hoosier Hoedown hosted by Indiana, and the Hatting Invitational hosted by St. Thomas. Iowa B won first place at Indiana, and Iowa A took second place at St. Thomas. UIMT as a whole came away from the weekend with five individual awards.
GO HAWKS!
-Fall Semester-
UIMT attended five tournaments during the fall semester, The Arch-Invitational hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, the Richard Calkins Invitational hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, our own Cornshucker Challenge here in Iowa City, the Quaker Classic hosted by Penn University in Philadelphia, the Ole Open in St. Olaf, Minnesota, and the Jayhawk Invitational hosted by Kansas University in Lawrence.
At WashU, UIMT took home four individual awards and the Spirit of AMTA award. At Drake, our Iowa B team received an honorable mention, and UIMT took home another individual award. At Shucker, UIMT received the Brooke Walton Civility Award (Spirit of AMTA), and two individual awards.
Then our teams attended the Quaker Challenge in Philadelphia and St. Olaf's Ole Open in Minnesota. Iowa C took second place at St. Olaf, and Iowa A placed fourth at Penn, in a field of 42 teams. Finally, at our last tournament of the semester, the Jayhawk Invitational at Kansas University, the last tournament before the semester ends, Iowa B took third place, Iowa A took sixth place, and our witnesses cleaned house and received three individual awards.
All of these wins were achieved by un-stacked teams.
